This is a highly unattractive but quite distinctive Phaeo (even Kit Scates though it ugly, and it was named in her honor!).

Multiple (up to 100!) fruit bodies arising from a single pseuodorhiza. Small stature. Hollow stipes with a thick cartilaginous rind. Lower stipes staining orange/red.

In this case, macro could be enough to make the ID.
