Observation 190897: Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers.

No herbarium specimen

Notes: Growing out of broken arm of older live oak tree. Similar specimen grew out of identical place, very similar date, 2 years prior. Specimen was 12.5 cm x 10.5 cm diameter, approx. 7 oz. Observed one week prior as pure white. Eaten safely when cooked and taste as commonly described for lions mane.

I’ve looked in vain for additional examples in the area, even though there are plenty of similarly damaged oaks around. Wish this species were more prolific!
