Observation 191019: Agaricus xanthodermus Genev.
When: 2014-12-01
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Several clumps of 3-6 mushrooms observed growing in soil, on leaf litter below blue oak tree. Diameter of cap varies; 7.5-10 cm in featured specimens. Color of cap generally white to off-white with brown-greyish patches, particularly toward center of cap. Cap smooth to flaking in darker areas, dry. Color of gills, which appeared to be free, varied from off-white in unopened specimens, to pink in opened specimens, to chocolate brown in older opened specimens. Skirt-like, off-white ring on upper half of stipe.

Similar specimen with pink gills taken prior day left chocolate brown spore print and had elliptical spores under microscope.

Yellow bruising esp. toward periphery of cap and at base of stipe easily demonstrated in younger specimens; fainter and more difficult to elicit in older specimens. Faded to brownish within 45 minutes.
