it is pretty much as soon as you lift your finger from the mushroom!

if you have scope access, you can also do the micro check: truncatus has truncate spores, which look chopped off at one end.

all of these Xerocomellus (chrysenteron and zelleri and truncatus) are macro-similar, and all are good edibles, when not buggy or old.
