Observation 192406: Cortinarius vellingae Bojantchev, Ammirati, Garnica & Beug

When: 2014-12-06

Collection location: Tomales Bay State Park, Marin Co., California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Ron Pastorino (Ronpast)

No specimen available

Caps up to 8.2 cm across and viscid.
Spores ~ 9.2-10.8 X 5.6-6.5 microns, almond shapped and moderately rough.
KOH on cap dark red.
KOH on stem and flesh was slowly reddish.
These were labeled “Cortinarius vellingae” at the MSSF Fungus Fair, but that name is not yet official.
I initially thought these were the same as MO82542 which were found in the same general area. The spores on these appear to be a little smaller and maybe slightly less rough and more almond shaped?
6-15-2015…On second thought, these have to be the same as MO82542, the newly named Cortinarius in honor of the renowned Mycologist from Berkeley by way of the Netherlands…Else Vellinga.
