No herbarium specimen

Notes: Small Russula. Non-blushing.

Cap – Largest “mature spent” was just under 2 inches across the cap. Most mature were 1.00- 1.75 inches across. Deep red with purple tones at center. Small immature, convex shape. Mature depressed at center.
Brittle – cracking open at maturity.

Gills – creamy – to yellow in older caps. Close – adnate. Gills waxy, granular, breaking up easily in older caps.

Stipe – short – 1 Inch long. White, equal width along length(width = 1/3 cap diameter ).

No significant smell.

Taste – did not taste.

Reaction to KOH – negative.

Spore print – creamy

Spore Size –
[20/1/1] L (5.8-) 6.1-7.6 (-7.8) μm x W (4.8-) 4.9-6.2 (-) μm, (L = 6.7 μm, W = 5.5 μm), Q (1.16-) 1.18-1.27 (-1.37), Q=1.22 Broadly ellipsoid

Many warts and some ridges. Assessed by building a combined focus image from 4 focus adjustments.

Warts – max ~1.5μm, most 0.5-1.0 μm

Ecology: Growing in small seepage area amid ferns with Laccaria and small Tricholoma. Nearest tree was Hop Hornbeam then Sweet Gum, Pines, Oak, other hardwoods.
