I will obtain a specimen next year, since it was suggested it may be Lecanora opiniconensis,

and not Rhizoplaca subdiscrepans. So it does pay to keep taking photos and collecting samples, even if in the end it will be “just” Rhizoplaca subdiscrepans. Meanwhile, here is the paper describing the difference between the two species:

Wow, it’s really hard to tell how many things are in the last photo. It looks like there is some paler thallus present, as well as the yellower apothecia. But the two don’t look correlated! I’d recommend ignoring that stuff and sticking to the well-developed and uniform patches. Even the “good stuff” is confusing enough… unnamable in my opinion! Let’s stay away from the parts that are all mixed and smashed up.

I’ve seen a lot of frustrated authors complaining about this group (Rhizoplaca and Lecanora muralis group in the very broadest sense). Some species do seem to behave well (e.g., L. sierrae), but R. subdiscrepans is apparently particularly mischeivous.

Please don’t beat me up – but here I come again :-]

Another iteration of the same theme. That’s why I keep posting these species – they are so variable. In fact, I am not convinced it’s the same species: every time I take a photo I think it’s something else. Is it? If it’s R.subdiscrepans, this is the first time I see them with green apothecia – usually they are tan or yellow. The bottom photo shows more typical specimen from the same boulder.
