Observation 194525: Lactarius paradoxus Beardslee & Burl.
When: 2014-10-30
No herbarium specimen

Notes: I’m rarely secure in Russula or Lactarius species ID but a few of them are so distinctive I kind of want to try!

Does look to be a good fit.
And even mentions NC as a locale. The Umstead forest is loaded with Loblolly pines.

Though! Not so much in Bessette Roody Bessette Dunaway — their photo shows a much more purple and dark specimen.

My specimens seem to be reluctant to give much staining.

the names on the pictures, I wish they weren’t so prominently displayed, these are guesses I threw on the photos as I processed them. I keep forgetting to change them to something less errant.
