Until I photographed some “weird” Caloplaca at Baraboo Riverwalk. Among the different species there, I think C.sideritis was present (first photo in observation 87292). Then Jason helped me ID observation 192287, so now I had an idea of what to look for in the species of this group. To ID the ones in this observation, I used Wetmore’s work “Caloplaca sideritis Group in North and Central America”. Thallus grey, apothecia orange, apothecial margin grey, dark excipular ring between disk and margin is present (something that can’t be seen in these photos but obvious under microscope).
