Fruiting in dirt and duff under oaks on coastal mesa. Caps velvety, areolate in age, to 7 cm. across, fissures spreading from center. No reddish tints in cracks, but note red layer under surface in photo of cut specimen (older specimens, in situ, also did not show red in the cracks). Pileus, 1 cm, stains slowly and fleetingly blue when cut. The blue stains redden in several hours. Pores minute, not arranged, yellow in youth to brown in age. Stain blue, then fading. Spore print dark olive brown. Stalk 2.5 cm+ at apex, 5.5+ cm long, tapering or the same and curved (see photos). Stipe bright yellow at apex, changing to red then brown tones, to white with a yellow end. The yellow mycelium is thick and involves both dirt and humus.
