Observation 196790: Amanita banningiana Tulloss nom. prov.
When: 2013-09-13
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Small orange colored mushroom, lightly striated on the margin with a relatively thick colored volva. Found in mixed woods in a damp area near a stream. I only took one photo and had plans to come back in a few days to observe growth pattern, but I never returned.

As always your input is greatly appreciated. This is the first Amanita button that I ever found with a volva colored like this. Still haven’t found A. jacksonii or A. banningiana. Maybe this year?

Amanita banningiana is usually much more yellow except at first…

when it can be notably brown over the disc.

Most of the taxa in sugenus Amanita with rusty or orangish or reddish spots on a saccate volva belong in section Vaginatae. For this reason, even though I can’t tell whether or not there is a skirt on the stem, I’m inclined to think this species would belong in the Vaginatae sensu Zhu L. Yang and not with banningiana in the Caesareae.

Very best,

Rod
