Observation 197555: Entocybe trachyospora (Largent) Largent, T.J. Baroni & V. Hofstetter

This substantial mushroom was about 7-10 cm high and wide. Christian Schwarz has suggested it is a type of Entoloma. From descriptions I’ve read about Entolomas this specimen seems similar to Entoloma bloxami. The written descriptions don’t mention a broadly umbonate cap as pictured here, however a few of the photos I found on an image search labeled as Entoloma bloxami exhibited such a cap shape.

Recognized by sight: I looked closer at these pictures today and realized this is like an Entocybe – the thick stipe (much thicker than Entoloma subgenus Leptonia) that is streaked vertically with silvery fibrils, and the largish size an deep blue colors suggest E. nitida, but I would want to see gills and spore details, since it is known primarily from areas north of here.
