Looked at other photos I have and there it is! The pore size difference in these two species is quite obvious. R. badius pores are MUCH smaller. Thanks for the tip. I have another one to look at here to see if I have it correct.

for your input. Guess I was basing my identification on the fact that the entire stalk was black. Both Lincoff and Kuo say that the base of the stalk on Polyporus squamosus turns black with age. But books certainly show there is quite a difference in the pore size. I’ll check my photos of the pore surface of what I do think is Royopous badius and compare the size. Thanks all.
