Recognized by sight: Xylaria squamulosa has the shortest stipe of the Xylaria comosa group, I think. There’s some debate about its separation from Xylaria aff. comosa (sensu Laessøe) and Xylaria griseo-olivacea, but the latter tends to have a greenish color and sterile apex, and the former tends to also have the sterile apex. Again, the only way to be sure is to look at teh ascospores.
