Observation 197962: Acarospora stapfiana (Müll. Arg.) Hue

on Caloplaca trachyphylla on quartzite; rocky broad northwestern ridge of summit, geology a mixture of siliceous metamorphic rocks; on broad ridge about 0.4 miles northwest of west peak (about 75m west of main peak)

thallus crowded-areolate bright yellow epruinose, areoles tall and stipe-forming with ~flat tops angular, cortex ~50um with half yellow-brown no epinecral layer C- in section (twice), algal layer thick with a few scattered hyphal bundles penetrating (best seen as C starts to clear it), apothecia flush rough dark brown angular epruinose, epihymenium red-brown, hymenium ~125um, parathecium much expanded at top, paraphyses with 1 to a few swollen cells at tips with dark brown cap ~3um at tip, spores many per ascus ~3.5-4.5×2.5-3um
