Observation 200152: Lactarius lignyotus var. lignyotus

When: 2014-07-18

Collection location: Blakeslee, Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Phil Yeager (gunchky)

No specimen available

Blackish brown mushroom with subdecurrent and concolorus white gills. Stipe equal with a white base. Terrestrial in a damp area in moss by a small creek. The closest trees to these were Hemlock (Tsugae). Margin of caps sulcate -plicate. A side view in photos shows the folds on the caps. L. lignyotus var. Canadensis has gill edges that are dark brown before fading to a lighter brown. L. lignyotellus also has marginate gills. L. lignyotus var. nigroviolascens has a short striate or crenate margin. I couldn’t decide which photo # 052 or 051 was clearest so I included both. These were pretty dry when found, and I don’t believe any latex was produced. Didn’t taste it
