Fruiting under redwoods in bark, wood chips and leaf litter. Specimen caps 6 to 8 cm across. Some staining reddish when cut. Between shaggy darker brown scales, cap surface is cafe-au-lait brown. Gills free. Spore print white. Specimen stalks 6 to13 cm long, 1.2 to 2cm wide. Older specimens are longitudinally striate with brown stains. Specimen veils not movable. Apex stains reddish when cut. Basal bulb with rim.
