G. nanum is a misapplied name for Geastrum schmidelii

The name Geastrum nanum is older, BUT NOT to be applied to this taxon.
It’s easy to see in Persoons own publication of it from 1809, that it’s another species with a well defined collar, not the same kind of peristome as schmidelii, and it’s also described as similar to pectinatum, but smaller.

This site is a treasure:
http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/
search for Geastrum nanum,
See Journal of Botanique 2, pages 2 (picture 3) and 27 (description)
(yes, it’s in french..)

Geastrum nanum should probably be considered a deprecated synonym to Geastrum striatum…

allright

that is what I do but than they say G.schmidelii is an old name and you have to choose nanum instead … that’s why I have nanum as name and in my observations also stands that the synonym is nanum …

I suppose you use the name Geastrum schmidelii too (with nanum as a synonym)?
