Brownish caps with purplish tints and fibrils. Stipe swollen at the base and having a peronate veil. Terrestrial in mixed woods. Oak, Maple, Birch, Hemlock. Differs from C. distans in that the stipe of that species is equal to clavate and the partial veil is not peronate and sometimes only leaves a thin ring zone on the upper portion of the stipe. Enlarge 047 to observe the veil.
