Observation 201317: Amanita vernicoccora Bojantchev & R.M. Davis

When: 2015-03-22

Collection location: Paradise, Butte Co., California, USA [Click for map]

4000m

Who: Michelle M (Michelle M)

No specimen available

Notes:
Believe these to be A. vernicoccora on sight. Cap striated on edges. Hollow to cottony stipe. Smell like heaven, faintly reminiscent of matsutake, oddly. Pushing up the duff in a mixed forest of mainly oak and fir at 4000 feet. Mad to try them but I know many give them a pass due to similarities to A. phalloides.
