Observation 202465: Agaricales sensu lato
When: 2015-03-22
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Posting on behalf of Ed Carter who found this near his home in Winlock, WA. It may not be entirely clear from the pictures, but these are pleurotoid gilled mushrooms growing on a jawbone (deer, elk?)

Ed wrote “Look like oysters, stem on side. This is flipped over, so even though gills are on top, they were facing down.”

See also another observation I found recently on deer/elk skull, which further sparked my interest in Ed’s find: http://mushroomobserver.org/202464

The resolution is not good. I asked for more pictures but haven’t gotten any. I tweaked the contrast and brightness a bit so you can see them if you view the larger image, but it’s not entirely clear.

I only know Onygena growing on bones etc. Weird to see a gilled mushroom doing this! I’m very curious about what it will turn out to be..
