Observation 202685: Agrocybe Fayod
When: 2015-04-12
Collection location: Japan [Click for map]
Who: shinto
No herbarium specimen

Notes: noticed a cluster of big ones growing directly from a big pile of rice hulls stockpiled near area of rice paddies. NO camera. Collected for spore prints, went back next day for photos of site where more growing near edges of hull pile in grass were photographed. The root like mycelia vigorously encloses large attached chunks of pure rice hulls.

It occured that perhaps PFTk technique for growing mushrooms could use rice hulls instead of ground rice flour. Rice hulls are dried and used in traditional pillows here, very comfortable. Hulls only might approximate the “diet” of a typical saprophyllic mushroom species better than rice flour? Someone might experiment, issues of density, compaction, porosity of medium would be something to consider with hulls only.

spore print violet brown as shown.
