I saw this when it was posted, but didn’t have time to propose Hypoxylon or comment then. Glad to see that the community is active! A cross section will give away Daldinia, showing distinct concentric zonation, usually alternating black and white. Most Daldinia in our area don’t have really obvious perithecial contours like this specimen. The size, the shape, and the surface texture all point to Hypoxylon for this one. Good find!
