Observation 203124: Mixed collection
When: 2015-04-21
No herbarium specimen

Notes: This fungus came from two separate ergot heads found in rye grain from Wheatland seed, a company in brigham city, Utah. Rye grain may have been grown outside of box elder County and shipped into it.

The ergot heads werre treated with a generic 3 type antibiotic and then soaked in hydrogen peroxide. After the peroxide soak they were placed on light malt extract agar. It as the first fungus to show on the plate and emerged directly from the ergot head.
The fungi is filamentous, rhizomorphic and seems to stain the agar purple with age (a week) while the older aerial parts and also purple, with the slightly younger being a Canary yellow and the youngest being a very white color. It is very fluffy and hits the ceiling of some petri dishes. Grows very rapidly, easily colonizing a full petri dish within a week and visible growth within 24 hours.
