Observation 204108: Stropharia rugosoannulata Farl. ex Murrill

Notes: These handsome, sturdy mushrooms were fruiting gregariously in various stages of development in a wood-chip mulch bed adjacent to grass soccer field. Smooth, dry purple-brown caps fading to light brown in age; in-rolled margin; largest were 8.5 cm. in diameter; gills crowded, adnate, white then light gray, finally purplish-gray. Largest stalk 10 cm. in length, 1.5 cm. wide, enlarged at base; prominent, characteristic “cog-wheel” ring. Flesh solid, white. Faint pleasant odor. Dark purple-brown spore print.
