Observation 204830: Gyromitra esculenta (Pers.) Fr.
When: 2015-05-22
(45.805° -77.1375° 201m)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found, unusually, in Zone 39. That’s a triangle of jack pine/mossy habitat that’s similar to Zone 18, which grows false morels along with Cantharellula umbonata and Cystoderma amianthinum, but which is also similar to Zone 19, which grows only the latter two species (and adds Ampulloclitocybe clavipes as another abundant mushroom). Historically Zone 39 has tended to grow neither Ampulloclitocybe nor Gyromitra. I guess now we know which side of that divide it comes down on. :)
