The hairs of Scutellinia species are deeply rooted in the excipulum, so their density cannot be influenced by external factors.

collected had been under water for several days due to river flooding. Do you think that could account for the sparse hairs?

Although it looks to have relatively long hairs they look too sparse for S scutellata.
