A question about Gymnopilus?

Gymnopilus liquiritiae is one of the most common fungus in this park. I have seen it MANY times there: Spring, Summer and Fall. Is it possible for this species NOT to have a stipe? This observation did not have one, however it certainly looks like the Gymnopilus liquiritiae I have collected there in the past except for the absence of the stipe. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this subject.
