to me this looks like a classic variipes, but I agree that the cap is darker brown than usual. Reticulation can be either white or brown, as the epithet variipes suggests. I, too, was often wondering about other species masquerading as B. variipes in the east. One thing for sure this specimen is in Boletus sensu stricto cluster à la Dentinger (2010).

there may be a different species hiding under the name variipes. Examples like this one, with brown cap and brown reticuations, have been compared to the European B. reticutalus.
