Glad the book worked for you, Dave. At the NEMF foray last year I was able to confidently ID a yellow russula I dug up from the display table. In most cases, however, the book leads to a dead end or a very tenuous ID. Still, it’s better to have it and use it that just giving up on russulas altogether.

Fatto’s Russula key. This was the first time I actually used it. Nice result! Led me directly to R. lutea.

Did some checking and found that the gill color for R. lutea should be yellow to ochre. Photos here show white gills. But the cap I had laid out for a spore print now shows ochre gills. The spore print, which had become significantly thicker, was much deeper yellow than I had originally observed.

…is so variable in your pix. Is it more like in the top pic?
Which letter did the spore print color correspond to in the book color chart?

I originally had thought it might be R. ochroleucoides, but the yellow print and peeling cuticle definitely don’t fit this species.

Given it a yellow russula, you should be able to key it out with Kibby & Fatto book.
