The ones in the center are being swallowed and don’t look round anymore. If I encountered such morphology on two neighboring thallii, I’d think I have two different species.
It’s like the thallus just keeps growing, finally overgrowing its own apothecia.
Of interest are different types of apothecia – the ones in the center are quite distinct from the ones towards the edges.
While not 100% sure, by examining specimens in situ it seems that algae-populated circles are leftovers of thalli of the same lichen.
