That apical tip definitely precludes X. hypoxylon (as does the location collected, probably), but without the spores it’s going to be pretty much impossible to ID. The flattening and cormoid branching makes me think that’s the right complex, though (but it’s a huge one). Sometimes in a mostly immature Xylaria like this you can explore and find one or two perithecia with one or two mature spores in one or two asci.

Sort of reminds me of X. grammica, but could be lots of things.

Conidia AND asci! Fun, right?!

If you do see asci, you should try the two different iodine preps, because there is a cool starchy organelle at the tip.

But it is possible! This getting deposidted in herbarium ENCB super early tomorrow morning, if we aren’t in a hurry I will scope it there. What should I be looking for?
