Observation 208458: Boletus edulis group

When: 2015-07-01

Collection location: Bear Creek, Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

No specimen available

These were collected under the same Norway spruce where I have harvested maybe 100 edulis over the years. Last night this area got 2-3 inches of rain, and some of the boletes were standing in a puddle today. I picked the ones that weren’t too wet. Context where tubes meet the inner cap shows pale grayish blue bruising that develops after a minute or so, and intensifies slightly over the course of maybe half an hour. I’ve seen this before with edulis.

I very much doubt these are subcaerulescens. I’m guessing the high water content correlates with the staining.
