Observation 208459: Gyroporus cyanescens var. violaceotinctus Watling
When: 2015-07-01
No herbarium specimen

Notes: I just wasn’t quick enough on the draw to catch the violaceous staining stage in the photo. Went to deep blue in only a few seconds.

Habitat…

border of coniferous grove, Norway spruce, some pine, some hemlock, some birch. This species seems to favor sunny roadsides, banks where the soil has been disturbed or landscaped. First time I’ve found it in this spot. I have a dependable area a couple miles from this, same type of habitat. I have also found this in NY and VT… same basic type of habitat. I have found nice fruitings in the Catskills and Adirondacks.

Nice find, Dave!
From all the post I’ve seen from you, Dario, Walter, and John P, this has been a spectacular year for boletes in the Northeast. May this continue well in August and September.
