Observation 208479: Amanita subvirginiana group
When: 2015-07-02
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Not sure which “group” this belong to. It does belong to the very cute group. I saw only one. This appeared to be fully mature cap.

Overall color – white. Any “yellow” seen in the photos is reflected light from the measuring tape.

Non-blushing, staining.

Spore Print: abundant and white

Total Height: 1 3/8 inch

Bulb Height: 3/8 inch

Bulb and volva height: 1/2 inch

Annulus/collar width: 1/8 inch

Cap: Diameter, ~3/4 inch. Striations at edges, length – a little more than half the cap diameter. Darker brown gray at center off-white at edges. Smooth. Granules in photo are sand, not sure if there are granules of veil material, too much sand.

Gills: white, free, thick and fairly well separated for an Amanita, short gills, intermediate gills. Breath ~3/8 inch

UPDATE:

When I compare this mushroom to the descriptions in http://www.amanitaceae.org, it matched the description, point by point with A. subvirginiana. Also, with spore measurements – while not matching A. subvirginiana – they are a closer match to it than A. virginiana. I decided the best place to put this is in the A. subvirginiana group.

Spore Photos – Measurements:

[18/1/1] L (10.0-) 10.6 –12.4 (-12.5) μm x W (-7.0) 7.1 – 8.8 (-9.0) μm, (L = 11.6 μm, W = 8.1 μm), Q (-) 1.34 – 1.48 (-1.55), Q = 1.43 ellipsoid

One difficulty with the images is the bright sunlight.

I’d suggest photography specimens in an are of shade with open sky above…to avoid the glare of the direct sun. I suggest the two species that David did and one more A. subvirginiana. Supposedly it is a different shade of brown from virginiana.

Very best,

Rod
