It had some amazing mass in the clay under the pinestraw. I see now that Roody’s book mentions this species!

Amanita rhopalopus is another option.

Amanita rhopalopus has more irregular warts, tends to have a rusty rather, than orangish-pinkish stain, and has a more deeply radicating bulb on the stem. These characteristics are all present in the image illustrating this observation.
