The photos with a black background were taken while Alonso and I were waiting for complete darkness so we could look for bioluminescent mushrooms. There wasn’t much ambient light, but that doesn’t matter. What does matter is that the ISO was low, shutter speed was high, aperture was mostly closed and the flash was extremely bright compared to the ambient light. Some were taken with the ring flash attached to the lens, and others were taken with the ring flash held off to the side, behind a large diffuser.
You can get the same effect in broad daylight by holding the mushroom in front of you, turning up the flash and shutter speed, and closing the aperture.
These particular ones I held with a toothpick, and used The Gimp’s clone tool to remove the toothpick in the photos.
how did you isolate these against the black so well?
