Observation 209784: Russula compacta Frost & Peck
When: 2015-07-11
No herbarium specimen

Notes: A pair fruiting in grass under Oaks. Cap: smooth, dry (except for the center which retains some moisture from overnight rain), feels like fine leather, 13.5 cm. Stem: 5 cm tall, 3.5 cm. at apex tapering to 2.7 cm. at base. Stem, gills, and flesh all bruise ochre to reddish brown. Extremely unpleasant odor of dead fish. White spore print. Second picture most accurately reflects the color of these specimens …. like a perfectly toasted bagel.
