amanitins and other, structurally unrelated, fungal toxins have any taste at all if tasted in sufficient (a spoonful) quantity. I suspect most macrofungi are bland regardless of edibility even before cooking, and in theory a few mgs of highly bioactive organic compounds should have absolutely no impact on the flavor. On the other hand, some receptors in the human body can probably detect chemical entities at ppm or ppb concentration and send their signals to the brain. How much of the agent(s) responsible for the bitterness of T. fellelus is enough to make us spit it out in disgust in just a few seconds? :-)

but you aren’t missing out on anything. I figured it’d be useful to know the taste of deadly mushrooms in case I run in to someone who thinks they may have consumed one. In my experience, there hasn’t been anything particular about the flavor of deadly mushrooms. They have all been unremarkable in flavor. The banality of mushroom toxicity, if you will :)

Never had enough cojones to do something like this even though I have always known that doing it is harmless as long as none of the tissue enters the digestive tract. Aren’t amanitins beneficial at very, very, very low concentrations?
