that the Culbersons documented a similar phenomenon in a paper several decades ago. Possibly maintaining an algal-free zone around the lichen will prevent competition?

Of interest here is how the lichen thallii keep black algae and other “baddies of Mordor” at bay, maintaining nice clean circles of red granite around them.
