So far as I know, Amanita pachycolea’s range does not extend into the midwestern states.

Very best,

The nrLSU gene leads us in a different direction.

Take a look at

More is known about this taxon than the one I know only from its ITS sequence.

This one has several easily seen morphological characters similar to your species such as the zonate cap and the stipe with dark fibrils.

The difference there is a genetic distinction compared to your material. Three characters differ out of over 1400. I looked to see if this could be attributed to quality of the reads. However, the sequencs are very clean and especially so in the regions where the three differences are found.

We have one ITS sequence for sp-GSM07 it differs from the ITS sequence for the present matieral in 14 characters positions of which two are gaps.

I don’t think we know anything about variability of sequences in sp-GSM07. Hence, I hesitate to use that temporary code for your material. The specimen I mentioned earlier also cannot be identified with your material with any certainty (we have no nrLSU sequence for it and very little morphological data). Hence, I propose a temporary code for you material: Amanita sp-WI02.

This is what I can do for now.

Very best,

Thanks for the update!

“Evil” groundhog? Weren’t you simply groundhog, previously?

Thanks Britt,

We have accessioned this material to Rod’s herbarium and scheduled it to be sampled for DNA sequencing.
