Observation 21396: Gyromitra korfii (Raitv.) Harmaja

When: 2009-05-29

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

Found in Zone 04 near rotting pine wood and beneath Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea), Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus), Paper Birch (Betula Papyrifera), Red Pine (Pinus resinosa), Spruce (Picea sp.), Yellow Birch (Betula allegheniensis), and an unidentified hardwood. Pine dominates.

Can’t identify this one. It does not seem to be G. esculenta; appearance is more like G. korfii and relatives. The real oddity here is the nearly-solid stalk. Lincoff’s Gyromitra section has nothing but hollow and chambered stalks.

With the chambered cap and general structure the genus is a nearly sure bet at least.
