Observation 21404: Gyromitra esculenta (Pers.) Fr.

When: 2009-05-29

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

A G. esculenta in poor shape found in Zone 09, far from all previous sightings in these woods. It’s not being fresh and other things lead me to think this is G. esculenta and not the other Gyromitra that has flushed more recently. The few G. esculenta that remain in the Pit look more or less like this one now.

Trees nearby: Balsam Fir (Abies balsama), Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus), Paper Birch (Betula papyrifera), Red Maple (Acer rubrum), possible Spruce (Picea sp.), and possibly some unidentified.
