The best characteristic of P.sciastra is narrow (less then 0.5 mm) lobes, as far as I know

and also “very isidioid soredia” versus “only slightly isidioid soredia” of P.orbicularis, according to Thomson, but I think that’s subjective for those of us lacking his experience.

Maybe past ID’s were wrong

Just a thought…I haven’t looked at the descriptions for these species, what is the primary difference? When I’m working through keys, whether for lichens mushrooms or plants, and the result just doesn’t seem right for some reason, I usually find that I made a leap of faith somewhere in the key that was incorrect. But, if your ID feels good, I’d look to past info being incorrect.

I keep looking for P.sciastra that’s supposed to be common in the state,

but keep finding P.orbicularis that at Thomson’s time was restricted to only three counties in Wisconsin. What gives? (Maybe my ID is wrong?)
