The classification of Rinodina spp. relies very much on the form and internal features of its spores. The British Flora gives provides a set of photo with the type spores existing in the British Islands. It seems clear to me that this specimen has mostly Dirinaria-type spores (see the photos attached) and maybe some of Physcia-tytpe.
It is not easy to know what species of Rinodina exist here and particularly those with Dirinaria-type spores. First of all, the British Flora cites three with that feature:
R. degeliana (S), R. ericina (O), R. insularis (P),
and one with Dirinaria- to Physcia-type spores:
R. oleae.
Here S and P stand for Sorediate and Parasitic, respectively, and O means that the hymenium has oil drops.
Thus, from these only the last one could be considered for the classification. The description seem to match, but the spores are smaller than observed ,13-16 × 7-10 um, in the British Flora, whereas I got:
(13.3) 14 – 18.5 (19.3) x (7.1) 7.7 – 10.8 (13.1) µm
Q = (1.4) 1.5 – 2.1 (2.2) ; N = 32
Me = 16.3 × 9.2 µm ; Qe = 1.8.
I have seen other photos of this species and the one given at Irish Lichens (Ref.2, where the identification is pending) is very similar to mine.
The other reference used (Ref. 3) only mention one Rinodina sp. with Dirinaria-type spores: R. nimisii. However, in spite of most of the description seeming to match, this species has warted spores, which is not the case of my specimen.
In conclusion, I was not able to classify cmpletely this specimen to species, most probably it is R. oleae but it can also be another species not considered at the references used.
