is an orange-capped species that exhibits dark purple staining on the cut context.

The mushroom seen in this observation appears to have a grayish-tan cap. There are several eastern NA gray/tan/brownish/pale-capped Leccinum species that are believed to be separable according to staining/non-staining and chemical reactions. These include… L. scabrum, L. snellii, L. albellum, L. holopus, and L. oxydabile.

The one in this observation looks to me like L. scabrum or L. snellii.
