Mossy lake shore with only a few trees nearby… sapling spruce, sapling larch, sapling pine, and some smallish maples. No staining.

Then I got busy doing some other stuff. I was wondering if you would notice that holopus may be proposed :-) I didn’t think about albellum for this one. I generally think of albellum as a hardwood associate. But, then again, BRB says holopus associates with birch (although cedar is also mentioned). Aside from the three types of conifer saplings mentioned in the notes, the only other trees I could find were maples. I scoped out the area pretty thoroughly, looking for a small birch that I never found.

I guess you ruled out both albellum and holopus.
