Observation 218419: Russula cessans A. Pearson
When: 2015-10-10
(39.9472° -74.9809° )
No herbarium specimen

Notes: > Growing gregariously in grass under mature Pinus strobus
> The largest mature cap was just under 7 cm in diameter; young caps are more like 3-4 cm in diameter
> The cap center is deep red, while the outer areas are pale red to medium pink
> Cuticle peels just a notch above 1/3 r
> The cap margin is tuberculate-striate
> Flesh tastes mild and waxy
> Gills are straw-colored; some forking at base only; waxy to touch
> The spore print appears to be pale ochre to yellow, but I need to observe them “in an opaque mass” to confirm and I bet it will be darker
> Fatto-Kibby code AIKNQT or AIKNRT; eventually arrived at R. cessans, after eliminating the first code, which is a very good match to the description at http://www.mushroomexpert.com/russula_cessans.html
