Observation 218449: Tricholoma focale (Fr.) Ricken
When: 2015-10-04
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Formerly Tricholoma Zellerii- this species looks identical to a matsutake from a distance. Except, of course, the cap is distinctly orange brownish/greenish hued with metallic striations of color threads on cap (exhibited most clearly in direct sunlight). Flocking on stem is identical to Matsutake, as well, with more orange/rust tones evident in T. focale.

Odor: like old carpet and cat pee.

Taste: mealy, bitter.

Found in moss beneath Doug fir(multiple T.magnivelare and white chanterelles nearby).

Elevation: 1700ft.

Temp: low 50’s.
