Observation 218595: Chlorencoelia versiformis (Pers.) J.R. Dixon
When: 2015-10-03
(42.257° -77.113° )

Notes: This was field IDed to Ionomidotis by Paula DeSanto (LongTooth) on the 2015 Peck Foray in Watkins Glen, NY. Microscopic features from dried material back in the SUNY ESF lab showed characters in keeping with that ID aside from the conspicuous absence of KOH extractable pigments (in 3% solution), from which the very Iono in Ionomidotis is derived. The prefix refers to a reaction by which a purplish brown pigment appears with the application of KOH, fittingly referred to as “ionomidotic.”

Authors of this Czech Mycology paper note the “indicator species” status of I. irregularis, which shows a strict preference for old growth, undisturbed forests in Europe. Assuming this is true for more than one species in the genus, and for more forests than European ones, confirming or denying the original field ID could take on new significance.

Micro: Ascus tips inamyloid, despite appearing somewhat bluish in the micrographs. No paraphyses observed.
